This year Communities In Schools of Michigan kicked off the school year with three backpack giveaways and helped to curve the costs for families in the back to school season. According to the 2019 Huntington Backpack Index the average family spends $110.78 to $304.61 for school supplies each year.

Communities In Schools of Michigan partnered with Power 96.5 to host their annual Backpack Giveaway on August 15th for families in the Lansing Area. Families came out to Gier Park Community Center to join in the festivities and to get free backpacks filled with school supplies for students in kindergarten to 12th grade. Over 900 backpacks were given out to students attending the Lansing Schools District, Waverly Community Schools, Holt Public Schools, East Lansing Public Schools and more. The remaining 300 backpacks were given out the first week of school to students in Waverly Community Schools. This event could not have been such a success without the sponsorship from the R.E. Olds Foundation, Joe D Pentecost Foundation, Sparrow, Meijer, and Career Quest. We look forward to partnering with Power 96.5 again next year.

In August, CIS of Michigan also held two backpack giveaways in Detroit at Regent Park Scholars Academy and Flagship Charter Academy during their back to school open houses. Students in elementary and middle school were able to meet their teachers and walk away with backpacks. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles gave a generous donation to provide over 1,400 backpacks and schools supply kits for students in these National Heritage Academies and Pontiac High School.
Together, with our partners and sponsors, a total of 2,600 students left these backpack giveaways with smiles on their faces and excitement to start the new school year ready to learn!
